Polar Attraction
Last weekend I went out with a cousin to watch my buddy’s band- The Polar Attraction. It’s a local band. They were playing in a place called VR1 Cafe. My friend is the guitarist by the name of Jaya. He’s a native of Sarawak from the isle of Borneo where I came from too. I have seen him played / jam alone and he is one awesome dude. Every time I make a visit to CK Music guitar store where he worked, he never failed to treat me like a well deserved customer. (I even get to play the toys in the shop anyway.. )
This three piece band is really tight. Their performance is energetic and they played a few of their own compositions. I would say their music style is really modern with a touch of Steve Vai & Satriani? I really enjoyed their own songs. It’s very unique. I enjoyed Jaya’s composition called “Only Love”.
This was the first time listening to them live and I have to say I am a big fan now. To sample their music, head over to Jaya’s MySpace.
By the way that weird looking guitar you see he’s playing in the photo is actually a hybrid guitar. The original guitar is a ‘Sape’ a traditional native Sarawak musical instrument from the lute family. The Sape has a very different tuning from a normal guitar. Jaya uses a Seymour Duncan pickup for his neck and Di Marzio pickups for the bridge. Now I’m not sure whether it’s an EVO2 Special or the Steve’s Special.
